Rather often in our speeches and
in our articles devoted to the problems of aeronautics we accentuated
on the fact that just an airship will become an efficient facility to
solve in complex not only the problems in technology, economy and ecology,
but the social problems also. However, the above confirmation was never
a subject to any serious argumentation.
It goes without saying, the wish to study closely our future and attempts
to analyze the results of the airship large scale longed-for implementation
into human community are not a simple curiosity: atomic energy with its
invaluable (Chernobyl and Threemile Island) experience appeals to know
it. Apparently, it become formed - from one side - by innate streak and
"genetics" of the airship and - from other side - by our abilities
to perceive them and to take its advantage in full measure.
Of course, the most important and evident property why we like and have
a confidence to airship is one: in order to keep an airship in air, no
any energy is to be spend, the magnitude of lift doesn't depend upon the
power plants and control systems operating. Notwithstanding anything that
could happen, the lift life-assertively is always directed up. And it
gives the sizable hopes and serves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration
and enthusiasm for numerous army of airship-lovers, among which there
are a lot of such ones, for who make an impression on possibility of flaming
and - ! - unpunished love to sky.
Moreover, one "plus" is not realized patently: the buoyancy
keeps the airship safely at a point located much higher of the centre
of gravity. So, we avoid the situation when we are to struggle against
very crafty danger, that is overturning - a nuisance for majority of transport
facilities. This is a fact, that the cars and trains demonstrate us the
real "miracles" of instability even under not so dangerous situations.
And even for that reason those who voluntarily try to
prevent the second appearance of the airship, commit inexcusable sin.
Because they categorically reject such a safe and beneficial flying principle
given us by the very nature. As to our position, we repent because among
us there are such "cavalrymen" who hastily outline a short draft
conferring it so elevated name as "a project". Such "sprinters"
place not only their own "project" under the stroke, but they
ruin the idea of the airship itself as well.
And now we'd like to underline one thing: very responsible approach and
well thought-out strategy in aeronautics revival with minimum expenses;
balanced, harmonious and transparent conception of new generation of the
airships aimed to achieve the highest efficiency for the national economy
as a whole - the above conception has been laid by the founders of our
Design Bureau at the beginning of 60-es. By that time following point
of view has been crystallized: "Not every airship shall be safe,
but only correctly designed one". And that very simple, very banal
and mostly self-evident idea hasn't been comprehended by the great mass
of people: simplicity of the lift creation principle gives birth to simplifying
the conception of the airship itself. Not everybody may have courage to
admit that the modern airship design is as almost complicated as that
one of the existing airplane.
At the same time it's quite impossible to ignore all
the arguments of our opponents. One of them is the lack of infrastructure,
without what any airship will be come only exotic, useless but very expensive
toy.
By the way, the above argument is rather important and it is worth being
closely studied.
No doubt: it's much easier to move without energy spending to overcome
the gravity force and rolling over the solid surface. The above force
shall be utilized for reliably way traction of the wheel with the road;
moreover, from the economical efficiency point of view, accuracy of control
action tracking etc., such a propulsor (that is a wheel in this case)
shall be more effective than propeller in water and especially in air.
To provide the efficient operation of motor and railway transport, we
are to arrange the following: to withdraw from nature permanent and mutilate
for ever every square millimeter of the soil allotted for road: that is,
to distort the landscape, disturb the hydrology of surroundings, to ruin
the arise existence of flora and fauna). As a result the infrastructure
of surface transport lines now assumed a view of the continuous system
of road interconnected sections, road crossings, traffic intersections,
bridges, tunnels plus the railway stations, depots, garages, fuelling
stations, substations. The described infrastructure shredded terrestrial
face with close and bleeding scars has been already developed, but it
is very far from perfection and it is too far from completion, thus, the
process continues yet. That's why let's not deceive ourselves: the price
of further development of wheel facilities is too high and it would never
be possible to avoid size or weight restrictions. Never in the life.
If to take into account the floating means, they
are able to navigate only in areas with a good water layer under the bottom,
that is they are moving at rather intricate ways being remote both from
consignor and consignee, as a rule.
And only the atmosphere makes probable the movement between any points
via the shortest distance. And by the way, no any important influence
upon soil surface shall be available herewith.
An airplane, the nearest relative of the airship, needs only in, seat
infrastructure for the landing: the runway is only hundreds or even thousands
times shorter in comparison with the distance covered by the plane. The
advantages are very evident. However, the projectors face more and more
difficulties when searching for the site where it would be possible to
place the above "point". And indeed: it's not so easy to find
about thousand hectares of the even surface field near the big town, and
moreover this land should carry very massive runways, taxi tracks, parkings
and, God save, don't break the peace of the townspeople by noise… And
no any mountains, electrical power transmission lines, tubes or sky-scrapers
around!

As to the airship, it will demonstrate
its "complaisance" and "tractability". The vertical
take-off and landing permits to operate as in the highlands, as within
the city boundaries. Moreover, these evolutions shall be carried out under
the low engine conditions. The places to embarking or disembarkation the
passengers and the loading points are not obligatory to be combined with
the parkings and service points, or with the fuelling stations. It would
be more reasonable to dispose them somewhere outside the city.
It may seem illogical, but the experience of bus station may become more
useful in comparison with that one of the airport: even in the centre
of the town it will be sufficient to construct several such airship ports
for the supplied with mooring tower (see fig. Montgolfier No 1). The port
will be intended to embarking or disembarkation the passengers only. According
to our own conception this goal come to replacement of hermetic passenger
saloons. Talking about airship "genetics", we have no any doubts
that it is in prospect to make a brilliant display of another outstanding
facet: all the units produced by modern industry, irrespective of their
weight or sizes, may be transported with no any problems concerning the
distances, geographical or climatic conditions by the principle "from
door to door", and they may be unloaded or assembled directly at
the site of the. It means that only an airship, being compared with the
other vehicles, flying at minimum speed, transports the freight from the
sender to recipient at the highest speed (and with the lowest cost of
one ton*kilometer). And no any terminal, as it is occupied and deadened
so immense territories.

The airship volume can serve as its summarized parameter: range of flight
speeds and altitudes is rather narrow, but the requirements to stability
and controllability, to basing remains the same. As result, multi-purpose
characteristics and adaptability will help to resolve different problems
with the help of the same airship. The interlocking assemble of 2-3-4
airships developed by our team (see No 1 "Montgolfier") will
widen a set of tasks to be solved with no any wasteful multiply of types,
at least at initial stage of airships revival. The "genetics"
of all other vehicles don't admit it!
Everybody has accustomed that the major volume of building
works is always executed directly at the building site. Already it's very
well that, for example, doors and windows are brought as a half-finished
products. And it's considered as a great revolution that the house-building
companies were appeared, but it would be more correctly to name them as
panel-producing companies. It looks as if an ordered machine tool would
be manufactured directly at the client's shop, and you are to forward
there all the workers, equipment, materials, components and you charge
the client to fulfill the majority of manufacturer's works and to take
responsibility for the final results of this work. Of course, last time
we joined to more advanced (and more cultured) building methods, but at
any case they are too far yet from the real industrial methods!
The building procedure could be absolutely different nowadays if 30 or
40 years ago so "wise" leaders of former state wouldn't reject
with haughtiness the "seditious ideas" of dissidents in technique.
By order of one big building company, in 1972 we've developed a project
of D-1 airship for transporting and mounting the flats units made with
a high degree of prepared (Fig.1). It went to the real revolution: according
to the project, the majority of builders have the permanent operator's
positions protected from external conditions; they operate with a stationary
equipment and tools; there is possible to keep the safety regulations
and sanitary engineering; such building is concentrated on the limited
number of works; the building process becomes rhythmic and of a conveyer
type, the buildings are delivered as fully completed. All the necessary
preconditions are created to attain the high quality (as to durability,
longevity, rigidity, seismic stability, thermal and sound insulation -
and all this due to monolithic performance). Engineering control and long-term
personal liabilities as well as a correct labour to wage ratio will be
introduced; dissipation and theft of material resources will reduce. And
no any doubts, that inconceivable technologies, mechanisms, new types
of arrangement in labour organization will appear under the new conditions.
And an airship will deliver not only a finished housing units, but a set
of the building machinery, service rooms, mobile habitation and the builders
themselves.
Now we can't even it image, but it must be so: after assembling of flats,
toilets and kitchens units, no any repair works are required. New settlers
may settle and live here!
Much more problems will be solved by an airship in the
sphere of erection of industrial works, such as hydroelectrical power
plants, for example, in mountains.
Thereof the hydraulic turbine and electrical generator are the key units.
No any roads to transport the units of such width, of such height and
of such weight… That's why we should dismember them, foresee the additional
butts, to wallow in supplementary complications only for one purpose:
to transport all above and only once, to assemble parts and after it we
should impart the described set a semblance of the integral and indivisible
structure, for a long time and with the greatest vain attempts and forces.
Of course, one can mobilize all our strong will and force
and quietly, purposefully, day by day with selfless expectation draw nearer
the bright future arrival, when gravitational vehicles able to ship any
your freight onboard to any distance and without present problems will
appear.
But one can by now mobilize all efforts to build a fleet of transporting-and-mounting
airships, and may be they will not be so perfect as gravitational vehicles,
perhaps, they will have shortcomings, let they depend upon a lot of factors,
but at the same time they can highly facilitate the life of builders,
adjusters, fitters, operators and repairmen.
Nobody may not disclaim the fact that turbine and generator designed without
taking into account the transporting and assembling problems, being manufactured
and finished by the manufacturer, carried by air at ready for service
state without any vibrations and transshipments and put at a required
site, will come far more safe in operation. And by far less of specialists
will be assigned to carry out the works, so it will be much easier to
create all required conditions for these life and work. Scientific and
technical revolution give birth great number of such monsters for which
the transporting and mounting problems are sole obstacle for its perfection.
With a power growth of a single aggregate, we have the raise in technological
and economical efficiency, so the harmful influence upon surroundings
will be reduced.
Specialists engaged in the building of long drawn-out
objects (the pipelines, power transmission lines, laying roads) feel the
same advantages. The airship make delivery all necessary machinery, equipment,
bridge spans, the pipes, mobile lodgings, compressor units, transformer
substations, pylons for electrical transmission - all the above will be
delivered being fit for operation, to inaccessible areas, and everything
will be installed at the appropriate site. Even the wiring may be carried
out from the air.
Thus, many peoples (both above mentioned and who are
to make geological prospecting; ecological monitoring; fire-guard; taxation;
forest felling areas and communication ways define; guard of frontier,
reserve areas and economical zones; to make ship pilotage; to carry out
and coordinate the emergency works when eliminating the consequences of
natural and technogenic catastrophes) shall not loose contact with their
families for a long time, work under the hard and dangerous conditions.
It would be possible to mount aboard a whole set of the required measuring
and laboratory instruments, also lighting equipment and other devices.
So the difficult watch keeping in the mining industry and building will
become much easier; there will appear the possibility of regular replacement
the ships crews, the staff of arctic, geological and other expeditions.
And such a disaster as frequent fires eliminate today very often at the
cost of lives and health both rescurs and victims. By the way, the majority
of obstacles could be much easier overcome by air, that is: high compactness
of houses, traffic jams, difficult access, danger of building down, current
blow, etc. Now the forest conflagrations pacify by the airplanes and helicopters;
the method uses during dozens of years, and as it seems, from safe distance.
But really it is not so simply: incredible turbulence fraught with supercritical
regimes, raised air temperature and lack of oxygen threaten with dangerous
power drop and even to complete engine stoppage. In addition, sometimes
they are absolutely helpless to extinguish the burning oil reservoirs,
chemical enterprises, explosive facilities, derricks, onboard sea- and
river-going vessels, in trains and cars on roads. As to the airship, supplied
tens, even hundreds tons of water or other fire extinguishers, it will
be able to put out the fire and to suppress it efficiently and without
any excessive risk. Moreover, the airship will save the people who got
into trouble in the mountains, skyscraper and impenetrable forest or on
water.
The "cooperation" of modern aviation with agricultural
sector is restricted in the meantime only by applying of fertilizers,
pest control and defoliation of cotton. The airship is able to widen significantly
the activity of vehicles: sets of agricultural machines and equipment
which are usually in operation two weeks per year can be shipped on board
of the airship, according to the current demands; it can also deliver
the agricultural workers, equipment and animals to the difficult to access
arable lands, it can take onboard the farm produce being collected just
now and deliver them to Consumer even if this one is settled the other
side of polar circle.
Our contemporary, satiated with "fascinations"
of created by himself surroundings try to tear themselves away into yet
non-embraced by this "civilization" spaces, but by the way exposes
them to ecological stress. We hope that the airship will give the birth
to ideal kind of the tourism: the so-called "contactless tourism":
"arrive - see - be away". Because it is not at all obligatory
to set your foot on vulnerable land (every plot of the soil becomes vulnerable
under the tourist foot!). But if you want step on this land, to promenade
only, not more. And wouldn't it be better to stay at the available hotels,
even remote? Or to establish the appropriate conditions directly onboard?
Instead, it gives the possibility to visit and to survey the mountains,
canyons, glaciers, jungles and tundra, islands, water areas, icebergs,
volcanoes and even natural reserves and protected woodlands.
Aerostat, the predecessor of the airship will significantly
facilitate the people's life as well. It will become a high efficient
environment monitoring equipment carrier (including fire detection), airways
and waterways control carrier. One aerostat raised at the altitude of
several hundreds or thousands meters will replace some very expensive
stationary towers with retranslators and radar sets. Moreover, so dangerous
radiation sources leads away off the Earth surface.
It would not be efficient to raise the searchlight by the balloon, as
at times it is proposed to illuminate the objects and plots of soil. Mr.
G. Bukhman, the doctor of engineering sciences, worked up has elaborated
a witty lighting system, using the balloon as a special reflector, and
the surface low power light sources shall illuminate the 100 meters diameter
pod (and with the unachievable by traditional methods uniformity).
It is appropriate to remind of tropopause wind electric power station
(see "Montgolfier" No 1). The above unit will generate ecologically
pure energy utilizing the airstreams of stable speed and direction.
As to unusual way of aerostatic transporting of liquid and gaseous fuel
- see the same number of edition.
Our "uncivilized", "barbarous and savage"
forefathers treated with a trepidation inhabitation surroundings, to the
forest and water as well. Instead of "grabbing" everything that
could be useful for their "household", they devised a great
number of limitations for themselves: what, when and how they could take,
how to compensate them, what don't touch with. They idolized water so
strongly, that they never threw waste products into it, but they couldn't
even pronounce a bad word near the water.
And let's look after our contemporary with their "advanced technologies"
of forest felling up: the after-effects of visiting of making a noise,
emitting fumes, cold-heated technique the nature will have to obviate
for a many dozens and even hundreds years. But the captive balloon (or
dirigible) will evoke a "condemned to death" tree in the most
careful manner: the violation will used only ones and in one place (but
how to saw-down a tree without any violation?). And the surroundings -
vegetation, animal kingdom, soil will have senses only a slight stress.
A sawn-down tree even will not fall to the earth, so long as will be raised
vertically and transported by air. Neither any skidding, nor floating.
And a good master get hold of whole tree (may be, only for exception of
roots), will endeavour to convert the waste products into the profits.
Not we noticed that every technological progressing is
a step to an abyss in the same time. For the first glance, all the novelties
born for the common good of mankind, but armed with limitless technical
might militant unspirituality certainly will use for extermination of
people, for annihilation of milieu, for self-annihilation of mankind in
the long run. "Suicidal civilization" - just so the competent
people define the reached by the humanity "yawning altitudes".
And what about our airship? Will become it another stage and step to the
final crash? Or it will stand in good stead to us?
Laying stress or even over-emphasizing its advantages
(obvious and evident ones!), we have no keep to oneself that the birth
of airship as a material object will not work smoothly. The harmless technologies
are in our bright future, where there are the gravitation vehicles also.
You see, the major materials for them are not at all the innocuous products
of the chemical and metallurgy industry, moreover the raw materials for
them are extracting and processing in not so vicious methods. So, long
before its first and solemn ascent an airship will leave a indelible trace
in the surroundings and in the health of its "parents". But
we are accustomed to it as to inevitably harm and payment for the progress.
And another thing yet: having received a transport facility with the minimum
limitations and maximum possibilities, a man will not resist the temptation
to feel deeply his own power over somebody or something. Without fail,
he will fly to the areas where it isn't allowed. And certainly, he will
endeavour to do the absolutely forbidden things. He will not wait for
bounties from nature, he will count up to take them as his the most principal
task. He will never miss the opportunity to conquer and destroy flora,
fauna, water, air, soil and bowels of the earth, and inner world and morals
also in the areas where they are remaining in the meantime yet due to
their inaccessibility. Now the question is not about self-willed, piratical
and poaching actions of some irresponsible persons (what frequently the
helicopter pilots sin by): first of all the largest fears are provoking
just the conscious activity of the official structures, authorities, which
unceremoniously will ground why it's have to change the rivers current,
to raise a fuelling station at the site of the ancient settlement, to
throw out the polluted sewage into river. And so skilled craftsman - without
fail - will find, who will accommodate the airship to make "zachistka"
and to "put the constitution in order", in other words, to kill
the people.
Unfortunately, none of now predominated ideologies and religions is not
any considerable obstacle against the triumphant evil and the wild materialism.
Alas: this was always matters stand. This is now matters stand also. But
we'd like that will may be otherwise in situation with an airship.
Our reader may seem that an author of this article started
on a merry note, is finishing on a sad one. No, not at all. We are engineers...
We can't bring to a stop the chariot of progress, even if it is inexorable
bolting straight to the abyss.
Our choice is very poor: only one way of inactivity and two ways of activity
are possible.
If we prefer the inactivity, another circumstances, laws and people will
run. Could it be useful for us?
And we may to act in the different ways.
First way of action: to whip up the horses, thus to continue the cutting
off the planet body by new and new roads.
And second way of action is: to slow down in only a little the self-destructive
trends, and this task already itself is a worthy.
We don't know who the what way prefers, but long ago we had chosen the
second one, and this is our deepest conviction achieved through much sufferings
and ripen during dozens of years that just an airship and only an airship
- and nothing else - will be capable to relieve the tension in our society,
to reduce an accumulated stress concentration, especially in ecological
and social spheres. It seems that the above statements and arguments will
be sufficient to confirm our opinion. The situation is such that until
there is no an airship, all other transport facilities have to overstrain
themselves executing the airship's functions. Entering upon one's duties,
the airship will cut off the unnatural (and something - affected) offshoots
and impasse mutations of the technical objects, and not only of aviation
one:
0 airplanes will not impelled to transport the 100-200 and more tons freights;
0 everybody will understand how excessive and wasteful has been the carrying
of 20-tons cargoes onboard helicopters (and only at shot range) and a
great risk for the making assemblage personnel;
0 difficulties of transportation of oversized cargoes by motor or railway
transport will stay in the past;
0 amount of laborious and overworking movements of lifting column cranes
and other construction engineering will sufficiently decline;
0 need in new airfields and storehouses will fall off, and in many cases
in highways, railways, ports and berthages as well;
0 influence upon land surface will be much weakened, global fuel and air
oxygen consumption, amount and degree of exhaust gases harmfulness will
be reduced (due to the quality of aero-engines); noisy and thermal pollution
level and total technogenic pressure upon surroundings will be much lowered;
0 conditions, caused by transporting and mounting to making technological
equipment, will completely break off; intensive way of national economy
development will strike root in a natural manner; material values and
capitals turnover will quicken; withdraw from circulation as well as transporting
and storage waste will be minimized; the works paces will accelerate;
quality of works and goods will take a turn for the better; concentration
and specialization of production process acquire a new and a higher level;
organization of production and transporting will be simplified.
And, if suddenly a large-scale calamity had befallen… what machinery will
quickly make a salutary transport bridge?
An airship. Only airship. And nothing else.
About an airship as the basic unit for aerostatic exploration system-

The airship provoking similar to avalanche intensification
of production processes in many branches of industry and in national economy
as a whole, will become a real example of intensive service to the mankind.
It should be necessary to project it in such a way, that the majority
of time it passes just in air, descending only from time to time: to carry
out the regular ground maintenance and repair; to reequip for another
tasks; under extreme situation and also during standing idle, if the owner
will admit it. "Genetically", an airship is predisposed to continual
floating in air. Moreover, keeping it at surface, we get extreme troubles.
In contrast to the airplanes, even the big-sized, the inner spaces of
the airship are rather big and gives unprecedented possibilities to meet
the requirements of maintainability, as to easy accessibility, quick detachability,
on-condition maintenance, the automatic check-out systems wide implementation.
The dispersion of units and communication lines will significantly weaken
the mutual influence and reduce availability of casual damages. Thus,
herewith the preconditions for failure-free operation and for easier trouble
search and elimination will be created. Moreover, a lot of works (elimination
of some defects, adjustment or replacement of many units) may be effected
directly during flight.
Can you name us another kind of transport facility with so comfortable
conditions for the crew and technical group? So, we have the right to
require the annual operational time of airship equal to ocean-going ships'
one.
To summarize all about, we are going to expect the following:
***A part of unproductive, unskilled and manual labour will be diminished;
spade, closing and odd operations will be cut down, thus the work conditions
will make qualitatively better and become a human being and will favour
the consolidation of staff. An army of travel allowances now forced to
lose touch with their families for a long time will be considerably reduced.
In addition, permanent risk as a customary companion for a lot of workers
and employers in their daily working will vanish.
***Efficiency of human labor will become much higher, as well as of material
and natural resources, of energy and finances. The human life value will
be raised also and the one of dignity and health, valuation of work will
become higher too. Food and housing problems solution will become easier.
And the positive effect will not limit itself to high transport efficiency
of the airship only; but due to the airship maximum efficiency of the
national economy will be ensured in a whole;
***the making in such auspicious conditions output will become a human
being; a consumer of this produce will become a human being also;
***and the surroundings will become more suitable for us: the living quality
will raise and the destruction rates of surround will a little slow down.
Of course, it would be a peak of naivety to expect the
resolving by airship of all the problems, both accumulated by the common
efforts of numerous generations of all "civilized" nations of
our planet and of rising up nowadays hopeless problems.
However, don't contrasting an airship to other transport facilities, it
would be reasonable to disclaim that just an airship is a missing link
of a transport system and it is the only self-sufficient facility able
to settle in complex a lot of technological, economical, ecological and
managerial problems and inseparably connected with them social problems.
Evidently, the humankind will not can survive without
the airship.
